Vault 100 clerkship salary bonus chart

The chart below indicates the clerkship salary bonus that the Vault 100 (2008) firms offer federal COA clerks. Some notes:
-The chart uses the highest number for an office if different offices give different amounts.
-The chart uses only the official number of the firm, not the number that some may negotiate or that some clerks may receive for working for a particular judge or circuit.
-The second number indicates what, if anything, a two-year clerk receives (or "cbc" if case-by-case).
-Blanks are unknown data.
-All numbers are in thousands of dollars.

†Two-year bonus awarded for district clerkship plus appellate clerkship.

‡Firm has announced a higher clerkship bonus than reported here; however, firm has reduced or eliminated other stipends for incoming associates, and the announced "bonus" listed here has been reduced by other stipends included in that bonus to reflect the net clerkship bonus. Additionally, firm offers $50K bonus for Federal Circuit clerkships.

°Awarded for Federal Circuit clerkships only.

There is an error. DLA doesn't offer $35K across the board. District court clerkships are still only at $10K! List of Shame!

How ironic that DLA penalizes you (and severely at that) for doing a district court clerkship. All the attorneys at my firm say that a district court clerkship is far more valuable to a practicing attorney than an appellate clerkship (unless, I suppose, you're lucky enough to be at one of the few firms with legitimate appellate practices, and - by an even bigger bolt of lightning - somehow get in with the appellate group as a new associate).

anyone know which of these firms pays the bar stipend retroactively if you accept after your clerkship? I know Paul Hastings does. Gibson Dunn does not.

Does anyone know how clerkships at the Court of International Trade are treated in terms of clerkship bonuses at Vault 100 firms? They are typically 2 year clerkships, if I'm not mistaken.

Two very important Qs:
(1) Do firms that list bonuses for "district courts" really not include those who clerked for a federal magistrate judge (who is legally a judicial officer of the district court) within the blessed?

(2) If you accepted an offer when the bonus was lower, and the firm raised the bonus in between the time you accepted the offer and the time you leave your clerkship and begin at the firm, do you get the higher amount?

Innocent MJ Clerk--

Unfortunately, most firms do not include MJ clerkships within their bonus heirarchy. You should definitely NOT assume that the district court bonus applies to you. Ask about your situation specifically; I have a feeling some might be willing to negotiate.

Any change on the sub-market clerkship bonus for district clerks at DLA Piper?

FYI, a friend of mine says that Greenbrg Taurig was offered a $50,000 clerkship bonus. That's a whole lot more than the 0 posted here.

I've done a district clerkship and am now finishing up an appellate clerkship. I can say this is certainly true. However, actual ability has little to do with success in the legal field; it's the perception of talent that matters. Sad but true.

At Cravath, is the "signing bonus" of $3k in addition to the $50k clerkship bonus?

Holland & Knight's clerkship bonus is 10k if you would like to add theirs to the list.
